I have found Platial to be a very valuable tool in writing your own travel guides. This hidden gem of the Web-2.0-movement, albeit still in beta meaning being very slow and rather buggy, has come in very handy recently.

When travelling, I usually keep a book of great places I see and that I often do not find in commercial guidebooks. Or that are difficult to keep in one place because they’re scattered over several of them.

I have begun creating a map on “Places to Go in Cairo” and “Places to Go in Brussels” and will continue to do so for other cities.

All maps are open and I’d appreciate if anyone added his or her hidden gems from all over the world.
